The First Task of Leadership

The first few weeks of the year is critical in setting the tone for your organization. Planning has been ingrained in most of the companies --- starting as early as October (some as early as July!) so we won't go into that.

But more often than not team leaders forget to verbalize and formalize their plans. Am I crazy in saying that? I don't know and I do not mean to generalize.


However, how often does the HR department chase managers and leaders to fill up the online performance management templates? --- Too often I bet.


Unfortunately, sometimes half a year passes by and yet --- we still do not have our objectives in place! So we rush the mid-year 'review' because we had to do a lot of pre-work.


If you are serious about leadership and management, this is definitely not a good thing to see. That is why I believe that ALIGNMENT is one the first tasks of Leadership.


At the very start of the year we need to VERBALIZE our plans and directions and FORMALIZE it by aligning on several areas; Goals, Rewards, Execution, Allocation and Timing!


Yes it spells GREAT. Because I will likely miss mentioning some areas critical to alignment but at least you will be off to a 'great' start!
